Hartenberg Wine Estate Winery Description Location and History Nestled in a valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, Hartenberg is a historic, family-owned wine estate known for its beautifully crafted wines, seasonal lunches made with local produce, tours of its underground cellar, and pristine walking trails through 60 hectares of conserved wetlands. The estate's viticultural history dates back to 1692, when the first settlers recognised the wine-bearing potential of the land, clearing it to plant 2,000 vines. By 1718, the property boasted 10,000 vines. Over the years, Hartenberg passed through various owners, including Mrs Hampf, who purchased the farm in 1928, extended the vineyards, and planted many of the trees that still grace the property. In 1948, the late Dr Maurice Finlayson acquired Hartenberg and, seeing the estate's true potential, began marketing wines under the label “Montagne.” The Finlayson family became notable for their contributions to South African winemaking, with sons Peter and Walter gaining renown in the field. In 1987, Ken Mackenzie purchased Hartenberg, and his daughters have since continued to invest in the estate. Hartenberg is committed to sustainable farming practices and is home to a rich diversity of indigenous plants and wildlife, including over 75 bird species, duikers, steenbok, and mongooses. Whether enjoying a wine tasting, lunch, or a family-friendly picnic outdoors, visitors are sure to be captivated by the estate. 1/1 Wine Tasting All wines are produced, bottled, and packaged on the estate, with a strong reputation for red wines, particularly Shiraz. The estate boasts the largest privately-owned underground cellar in South Africa, providing the ideal environment to age wines for several years before release. The goal is to create soft, rich, yet elegant wines with the ability to age while retaining vibrant fruit characteristics—wines that are timeless, classic, and fresh. Herold Wines Winery Description Location and History Herold Wines is located on the northern slopes of Cradock Peak in the Outeniqua Mountains between George and Oudtshoorn. Surrounded by a nature reserve on three sides, the vineyard sits at an altitude of 650m to 700m, benefiting from frequent mountain mists, winter frosts, and cooling summer winds. This unique environment creates a protracted growing season, resulting in high-quality wines. Herold Wines was established in 1999, initially planting Pinot Noir and later expanding to include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nico and Maureen Fourie took over the farm in 2011. The farm is 324 hectares, with the vineyard now covering 7.9 hectares with 30,000 vines. The Herold team, deeply connected to the land, manages the vineyard with minimal intervention, avoiding fertilizers and pesticides and maintaining a sustainable approach to farming. 1/1 Wine Tasting Visitors can enjoy wine tasting in an unpretentious area within the working cellar, often witnessing winemaking in action.
