Buitenverwachting

Winery Description

Location and History

Situated on the east-facing slopes of the Constantiaberg in Cape Town, Buitenverwachting Wine Farm boasts a rich and storied past. Originally part of the Constantia Estate, it was established by Simon van der Stel in the 18th century and has changed ownership several times. Flourishing as a wine farm, it saw significant developments during the 19th century. The fortunes of the farm became intertwined with the Louw and Lategan families, leading to a restoration by the Mueller family, who replanted selected grape cultivars. This revitalization culminated in a successful grape harvest after 30 years, aptly reflecting its evocative name, meaning 'Beyond Expectation.' The vineyard showcases the unique climate and terroir of Constantia, primarily focusing on Sauvignon Blanc, and is noted for flavorful wines that include hints of melon, passion fruit, and green pepper. Visitors will appreciate the panoramic views of the serene surroundings, which remain a significant draw for wine enthusiasts.

Wine Tasting

The wine tasting experience at Buitenverwachting takes place in a historic cellar characterized by a traditional thatched roof and charming decor. This inviting atmosphere features leather couches and a tasting bar that provides a relaxed environment for sampling wines. Guests can enjoy views from the stone-tiled terrace overlooking expansive lawns and a magnificent 250-year-old Norfolk Pine. The wine selection showcases an impressive array of varietals, such as Buiten Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc Constantia, and the elegant Hussey's Vlei, each offering a unique tasting profile. The tastings are guided by knowledgeable staff, allowing visitors to explore five selected wines for a set fee. Charcuterie platters and artisan ales accompany wine tastings, enhancing the experience for friends and family who wish to linger in the picturesque surroundings.
