Calitzdorp Cellar

Winery Description

Location and History

Calitzdorp Cellar was founded in February 1928 by local farmers as Calitzdorp Vrugte Uitvoerders Kooperatiewe Vereeniging Beperk. Calitzdorp Cellar began its journey with a focus on exporting premium soft fruits, including grapes, peaches and apricots. Initially, the cellar's operations were centred around exporting and sending wine to a distillery in Oudtshoorn where it was further distilled for KWV.

Calitzdorp Cellar's journey took a significant turn following its 50th anniversary. During this period, the cellar underwent substantial expansion, with new tanks and facilities being introduced to enhance production. The appointment of a new winemaker marked the beginning of a new era, leading to the first wines being bottled under the Buffelskroon label. Over the years, the cellar has earned numerous accolades, including being named the Champion Cooperative Winery of the Little Karoo twice, and receiving high honours at the SA Young Wine Show and the Veritas Competition.

Their Hanepoot and Cape Port have been recognized as SA Champions at the SA Young Wine Show, receiving the prestigious Etchell trophies. The cellar has grown significantly, with production increasing from 2000 tons to 5000 tons over the past 13 years. Other celebrated wines include Jerepiko, Red Muscadel and White Muscadel.

Wine Tasting

The vineyards, spanning 300 hectares and encompassing 40 farms, benefit from the various terroirs that contribute to the complex flavours of the different cultivars. The area is known for its diverse natural beauty, ranging from rugged red soils and shaded kloof areas.

The cellar’s first red wines were crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with Shiraz, Pinotage, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc being introduced in the early 1990s.

In 1978, the addition of a dedicated tasting room was added as a response to the increasing interest from both local and international tourists eager to experience the region's unique offerings and further solidified the cellar’s reputation as a premier destination for wine enthusiasts."

Restaurant

Uitkyk Eatery, a pop-up bistro at Calitzdorp Cellar since 2022, is celebrated for its hearty meals and traditional Sunday lunches. The menu features comforting dishes like oxtail and curries, with seasonal updates. "Uitkyk," meaning "lookout," reflects the eatery’s stunning 180-degree views of the Gamka Valley.
