Location and History

Situated approximately 30 km from Cape Town, Capaia Winery lies on over 140 hectares of land in Philadelphia. The estate was founded by Ingrid Baroness von Essen and her husband Alexander Baron von Essen on the grounds of a former wheat farm. This location was thoughtfully selected based on soil analyses, indicating its potential for viticulture. The vineyards are planted on three north-facing slate hills with a unique mix of light schist and clay soil. The terroir contributes significantly to the wines produced here, with a focus on sustainability and natural processes in winemaking. Capaia's commitment to conservation is evident through its partnership with CapeNature to protect local biodiversity, specifically the critically endangered Swartland Shale Renosterveld. The estate’s picturesque landscape encompasses stunning views of the surrounding Olifantskop Mountains, providing a serene backdrop for visitors.

Wine Tasting

The wine tasting experience at Capaia Winery invites visitors to sample exclusive wines crafted from sustainably grown grapes. The estate produces a range of offerings including the Capaia Sauvignon Blanc, Capaia Rosé, and several red blends like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Guests can enjoy tastings within a stylish tasting room designed to enhance the appreciation of the wines. Furthermore, the winery hosts cellar tours that delve into their winemaking process and history, allowing participants to view one of the largest collections of wine barrels in the Southern Hemisphere. Restaurant

Mariella's Restaurant, named after the owner's daughter, enhances the Capaia experience with its delightful dining offerings. Established in 1997, the restaurant occupies the historical farmhouse that has been beautifully restored to maintain its Victorian features. It serves a menu of high-quality dishes that complement the wines, prepared by Chef Brendan du Preez, who focuses on simple yet sophisticated meals using fresh, quality ingredients.
