Compagniesdrift
Winery Description
Location and History
Compagniesdrift has experienced significant growth since its inception, having begun with just four wine producers. It now stores wine for 80 producers, with over 2.5 million bottles housed in its warehouse. The facility serves local wine producers, offering a cost-effective solution for those without their own storage or who would otherwise need to transport wine long distances to access such infrastructure.
Compagniesdrift Wines were launched in May 2015 by farm workers with longstanding ties to prominent Stellenbosch wine estates. The wines are crafted by acclaimed winemaker Altus Treurnicht. The initiative was driven by the Myburgh Family Trust, owners of the esteemed Meerlust Wine Estate, with the aim of creating meaningful and economically sustainable empowerment for its workers.
Since July 2019, Compagniesdrift has been owned by the Meerlust Workers’ Trust. The company was originally established through a collaboration between the Myburgh Family Trust, Standard Bank, and the Department of Land Affairs via its Land Reform and Development Programme. The 72 beneficiaries have deep-rooted connections with Meerlust, Vriesenhof and Ken Forrester.
The facility features a modern, temperature-controlled warehouse with a storage capacity of up to 3 million bottles. A labelling service is also offered, providing clients with the convenience of labelling on demand in accordance with required quantities. In addition, reworking services are available for export purposes.
Established in December 2010, the storage facility has grown from its initial base of four clients to serving more than sixty today. It remains a cost-effective option for local wine producers requiring both storage and in-house labelling services.
