Constantia Glen

Winery Description

Location and History

Steeped in history in South Africa’s oldest wine producing region, picturesque Constantia Glen is ideally located below Constantia Nek, just 25 minutes drive from the centre of bustling Cape Town.

A family-run estate lovingly maintained over several generations, the farm sits on just 60 hectares at a sloping altitude of 130-270 metres above sea level. Notoriously difficult to farm, its wine origins date back to the 1700s however prior to the turn of the 21st Century, had been predominantly known as a successful cattle stud and fruit farm.

Following a devastating fire which engulfed much of the area in the year 1999, the farm’s livestock was evacuated and the decision made to return Constantia Glen to its historic wine roots. The majority of new vines were planted in 2001 and the first wines produced in 2005. With a mere 29 hectares under vine, the estate is a true boutique wine operator, producing just 120,000 bottles of premium, cool climate wines per year.

Wine Tasting

Constantia Glen enjoys a unique position nestled between the Constantiaberg and Table Mountain ranges, with predominantly north-east facing slopes that benefit from late afternoon sun. This prime location fosters slow ripening, resulting in crisp white wines and fresh, vibrant reds with elegance and structure.

Visitors can relax with a drink and light bites in one of the many cozy indoor and outdoor tasting areas, while taking in some of Cape Town’s most stunning views.

A wide selection of wine tastings is available including an option to only taste white or red wines if you have a preference. There is a comprehensive Full House Tasting which covers all the Constantia Glen wines with most of the wines available by the glass or bottle too.

Restaurant

Visitors can enjoy a relaxed, seasonal menu in one of the farm’s inviting dining spaces, including the warm Glass House restaurant, the sun-soaked Cobblestones patio, or the charming outdoor Veranda. Each offers stunning views of the vineyards and lawns and can be pre-booked.

The menu at Constantia Glen includes a variety of delicious options, such as platters, salads, soups, gourmet mains, and desserts, all made with the freshest, highest-quality ingredients sourced sustainably, with a touch of Austrian influence. Popular dishes include cheese and charcuterie platters, burgers, seared tuna, and flammkuchen (a thinly rolled flatbread baked in a wood-fired oven).

The venue can be booked for events. Contact the estate to enquire.
