Deux Frères Wines

Winery Description

Location and History

Situated in the picturesque Simonsberg foothills, Deux Frères is part of the Stellenbosch wine route. This region is characterised by its diverse terroir, which includes well-drained soils that are ideal for viticulture. The vineyard is owned and operated by the Du Toit family, who have implemented sustainable farming practices on their property. Deux Frères was founded in 2008 when brothers Retief and Stephan du Toit decided to continue the heritage as a “wine family” left to them by their mother and stepfather, Hester and Marc Wiehe. The estate is known for its commitment to producing high-quality wines with a focus on craftsmanship and tradition. With only 5,000 cases produced annually, Deux Frères maintains an intimate boutique approach to winemaking.

Wine Tasting

At Deux Frères, wine tastings present an enjoyable opportunity for guests to engage with the winery's offerings in a relaxed atmosphere. The majority of the estate is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, which forms the foundation of their flagship wine, “Tribute”. This variety is supported by Petit Verdot, Malbec, and the newly grafted Cabernet Franc. With three distinct clones available, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is produced as a single vineyard wine in limited quantities. This wine is part of the Simonsberg tradition, celebrated for its unique and superior quality in Cabernet Sauvignon. A special block of 14 rows of Mourvèdre, planted in unusual sandy soils, highlights the land’s remarkable diversity. The wine from this block also forms part of the single vineyard range.

Completing the portfolio is a block of 37-year-old Sauvignon Blanc vines, planted on a north-westerly slope. These vines produce wines that strike a balance between freshness and the more traditional style associated with Stellenbosch.

The tastings are designed to be informal yet informative, allowing visitors to explore the unique qualities of each wine. This engaging experience fosters a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into each bottle produced at the estate.

The Tasting Room offers inside and outside seating. Pre-booking is recommended but is essential should you wish to enjoy a food and wine pairing or food platter.

Both villas offer a generous conservatory or sunroom, filled with greenery, reading material, and a fireplace for chilly winter evenings. Villa Zamia includes an additional study or sitting room, furnished with comfortable seating, a second television, and a collection of Zamia and Ceratozamia plants. Villa Sclavoi features an expansive L-shaped conservatory offering scenic views and ample space to unwind. It is named after a critically endangered African cycad species, one of several red list plant species found on the Deux Frères estate.

Guests of both villas have access to a private pool area with plush loungers and a large lawn bordering the nature reserve, where a rich array of birdlife can be observed.

Complimentary WiFi and DStv satellite television are included. Breakfast and afternoon tea with scones are served on each villa’s private verandah, while evening drinks are enjoyed at the pool. Assistance with restaurant bookings, Uber arrangements, and guided excursions is gladly provided.
