Escape Wines

Winery Description

Location and History

Escape Wines is situated in the Overberg countryside, 15 kilometres outside Hermanus and in close proximity to the ocean and Bot River lagoon. Here a few barren hectares of land have been transformed with great care to make the most of their natural surroundings. Proteas and wine are produced by this modern farm. It is a pursuit of excellence and the unexpected, carried out with energy and enthusiasm in a down-to-earth manner.

The farm is adorned by proteas growing on the sandbanks of the river, adjacent to the vineyards. Proteas, South Africa’s national flower and known for its large and diverse family, symbolises the diverse local culture celebrated by the brand. The farm provides quintessential South African experiences with a modern twist, with a warm welcome and inclusive of all.

This narrow stretch of land is the quintessential Walker Bay terroir. The vineyards, situated 20 to 50 metres above sea level, benefit from strong maritime influences during critical growing periods. The steep southern slopes allow for optimal vineyard orientation, harnessing the cool climate. The deep and varying clay soils, along with topsoil conditions, add to the character and complexity of the wines.

Wine Tasting

The vineyard-to-bottle production process is overseen by David Nieuwoudt of Cederberg Wines. A well-known personality in wine circles locally and abroad, David and his team meticulously create wines that perfectly align terroir with style, resulting in a final product that captivates and pleases customers. David, now the fifth shareholder in the novel escape collection, brings his craftsmanship and expertise to define the product collection – which will be ever-evolving.

Escape Wines offers a wine tasting journey at their unique tasting room, known as “Die Afdak.” It is a place to unwind and enjoy award-winning wines while taking in the beautiful scenery. “Die Afdak” is unlike any other tasting room – it is an experience, a place where stories are shared and memories are created.
