Grundheim Wines

Winery Description

Location and History

Six generations of the Grundling family have farmed the land of Sandkoppies, with all six of these generations involved in wine-making for Grundheim Wines. The farm was established in 1858 and is situated between Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp. It boasts a historic wine cellar, with more than 100 years of history. In April 1994, Grundheim opened its Wine House and sold its first sweet wine under its own trademark.

Wines are still made and aged traditionally. Grundheim is renowned for its use of open tank fermentation. From bottling to labelling, every step is personally supervised. The farm specialises in sweet wines like muscadel, jerepiko, port-style wines and liqueurs and is especially known for their Witblits and Brandy, made in a traditional distillery. Also available is a variety of Gin, Vermouth, as well as Rum. The label of the Witblits range features a bull terrier, symbolising the bite and grip you’ll get from their Witblits.

Wine Tasting

Visitors to Grundheim are welcomed by Elana and Ena, the two ladies in charge. They are sisters-in-law and by the time you leave, you will feel like part of the family. With so many products, it is impossible to taste them all, and they are great at making suggestions. Grundheim Wines is the perfect place to learn about history of the farm, the area and the family as well as listen to the incredible stories behind their brand. Expect a lot of laughter and amazement. Tastings are done inside the tasting room, with plenty of shaded outdoor seating.
