Hartenberg Wine Estate

Winery Description

Location and History

Nestled in a valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, Hartenberg is a historic, family-owned wine estate known for its beautifully crafted wines, seasonal lunches made with local produce, tours of its underground cellar, and pristine walking trails through 60 hectares of conserved wetlands.

The estate's viticultural history dates back to 1692, when the first settlers recognised the wine-bearing potential of the land, clearing it to plant 2,000 vines. By 1718, the property boasted 10,000 vines. Over the years, Hartenberg passed through various owners, including Mrs Hampf, who purchased the farm in 1928, extended the vineyards, and planted many of the trees that still grace the property.

In 1948, the late Dr Maurice Finlayson acquired Hartenberg and, seeing the estate's true potential, began marketing wines under the label “Montagne.” The Finlayson family became notable for their contributions to South African winemaking, with sons Peter and Walter gaining renown in the field. In 1987, Ken Mackenzie purchased Hartenberg, and his daughters have since continued to invest in the estate.

Hartenberg is committed to sustainable farming practices and is home to a rich diversity of indigenous plants and wildlife, including over 75 bird species, duikers, steenbok, and mongooses. Whether enjoying a wine tasting, lunch, or a family-friendly picnic outdoors, visitors are sure to be captivated by the estate.

Wine Tasting

All wines are produced, bottled, and packaged on the estate, with a strong reputation for red wines, particularly Shiraz. The estate boasts the largest privately-owned underground cellar in South Africa, providing the ideal environment to age wines for several years before release.

The goal is to create soft, rich, yet elegant wines with the ability to age while retaining vibrant fruit characteristics—wines that are timeless, classic, and fresh. This is achieved through decades of in-depth knowledge of the terroir, combined with ongoing innovation and meticulous attention to detail.

Wine tastings are available in the Tasting Room, and the large picnic gardens and jungle gym provide ample space for children to play. For larger groups, pre-booking is required.

Premium and Super Premium tastings are available, offering a selection of estate wines, including the flagship Gravel Hill Shiraz. Cellar tours or Vinoteque Tastings can be arranged by prior reservation only.

Restaurant

The small lunchtime menu offers a selection of seasonal dishes, including salads, burgers, and rotating blackboard specials, along with a kiddies' box. The Vintners Platter features local charcuterie and cheeses, with vegan and vegetarian options available upon request.

For summer picnics, the offerings include breads and dips, cheeses, charcuterie, and a variety of deli savoury and sweet treats. Vegetarian, vegan, no pork, halaal, and kiddies' boxes are available upon request.
