Ken Forrester

Winery Description

Location and History

Scholtzenhof, one of the oldest wine estates in the Cape, was initially granted as Zandberg in 1689, ten years after the founding of Stellenbosch. Governor Simon van der Stel allocated the land to Frederick Boot, who later adopted the surname Botha. In 1694, Botha planted the first vineyards and began constructing the homestead. By 1833, the estate was acquired by a German family named Scholtz, who renamed it Scholtzenhof and cultivated vines for nearly a century.

In 1993, Ken and Teresa Forrester purchased the historic vineyard, which had been left vacant and in disrepair. They undertook an extensive restoration of both the vineyards and the homestead. The first wines under the Ken Forrester label were produced in 1994, sourced from the estate’s vineyards, with some of the vines dating back to 1970.

The estate, located on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in the renowned Stellenbosch wine region, attracts visitors year-round. The newly refurbished Wine Lounge offers spectacular views of the Helderberg, creating an inviting atmosphere for guests. Wine enthusiasts from around the globe visit to enjoy Ken Forrester’s award-winning wines and the welcoming charm of the farm. Visitors are encouraged to explore the wines through personalised tastings in the Wine Lounge, where history and craftsmanship permeate every experience.

Wine Tasting

Ken Forrester Vineyards offers a range of tasting options, including the Reserve Range Tasting, Icon Range Tasting, Chenin Blanc Tasting, and Petit Range Tasting. Additionally, the estate became the official importer of Billecart-Salmon Champagne to South Africa in 2001, and a curated selection of these fine champagnes is available in the Wine Lounge.

The estate prides itself on sustainable farming practices, eschewing herbicides and pesticides in favour of hand-tilling, pruning, thinning, and harvesting. This labour-intensive approach creates jobs within the community, reflecting the estate’s commitment to improving local livelihoods. Each bottle of wine represents a victory for this ethos, contributing positively to the lives of those involved.

Restaurant

For guests seeking to pair their wine experience with food, the Wine Lounge offers a Dalewood Cheese and Wagyu Biltong Platter, featuring a seasonal assortment of cheeses, biltong, preserves, and biscuits. The Wine Lounge also houses a curated deli selection, offering homeware, apparel, and culinary items such as the estate’s signature Chenin meat rub, local honey, and a variety of mustards—essential additions to any kitchen.
