Location and History

Nestled in the picturesque region of Stellenbosch, Kleine Zalze is situated on Strand Road (R44), just a few miles from the vibrant historical town of Stellenbosch. The winery, established in 1996 under the ownership of Kobus Basson, has a rich history dating back to 1695, when winemaking first began in the area. Surrounded by rolling hills and lush vineyards, the winery benefits from a unique terroir that includes diverse soils and sloped vineyards, coupled with cooling breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. This combination creates optimal conditions for grape cultivation, allowing the production of high-quality wines. With its commitment to environmentally sustainable practices, Kleine Zalze adheres to the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme, showcasing their dedication to preserving the land. The estate encompasses 120 hectares of meticulously managed vineyards, which are central to their winemaking philosophy, prioritizing quality, sustainability, and community engagement.

Wine Tasting

Kleine Zalze wines are distinctly South African in style, offering well-structured, beautifully balanced selections that reflect their origin and cultivar. Acknowledging that different occasions call for different wines, the estate presents a collection of wine ranges to suit a variety of preferences. The Wine Tasting Centre is conveniently located between the winery and the restaurant, providing a range of tasting options, including Family Reserve tastings, Cap Classique, and Vineyard Selection. Knowledgeable wine advisors are on hand to guide visitors through the award-winning selection. Guests can relax in a peaceful setting, either under the vines or oak trees during summer, or indoors during the winter months. Bookings are recommended in the summer season.

A selection of tapas and nibbles are also available to accompany your wine tasting.  Sample items include such as biltong, olives, cheese or charcuterie platters, plus rotating meat and seafood tapas plates.

Restaurant

The restaurant at Kleine Zalze offers a unique culinary experience led by chef Nic van Wyk. Serving lunch daily, the restaurant features a menu that emphasises fresh, quality ingredients. The innovative dining options cater to various preferences, from tapas plates to full meals, all thoughtfully paired with the estate's exceptional wines. Guests can choose from the new Taste, Explore, Relax menu which allows flexibility in portion sizes. Dine outdoors on the terrace or enjoy the contemporary indoor ambiance. The restaurant's commitment to accommodating diverse dietary needs ensures everyone can indulge in the culinary offerings. Visitors are encouraged to make reservations.
