Kranskop Wines

Winery Description

Location and History

Kranskop Winery, nestled in the Breede River Valley, has a rich history that dates back to approximately 1792 when the first vines were planted. The winery takes its name from the rugged, rocky hilltop known as Kranskop, which inspired the estate's name and its visual identity. The winery's cellar began its first production in 2001. Still, it wasn't until 9 April 2003 that renowned winemaker Newald Marais made a significant connection with the estate, praising it in the visitor's book with the words, "What a dream!!" Little did he know that he would one day become the proud owner of this boutique winery.
In 2009, Newald Marais fulfilled his dream by acquiring Kranskop Wine Estate, where he now produces meticulously crafted, basket-pressed wines. Marais' journey in winemaking began in a garage on his family's farm, Welgeluk, outside Robertson. After studying viticulture and pomology at Elsenburg Agricultural College and honing his skills in Germany at Weinbauschule Weinsberg, he returned to South Africa as a consultant to various cellars. His expertise and passion for traditional winemaking methods are now poured into the exceptional wines produced at Kranskop.

Kranskop offers a diverse range of wines to cater to different tastes and preferences. The winery produces four whites, a rose, five reds, and a Noble Late Harvest. The red wines, in particular, stand out with their unique pulping process using the traditional basket press.
