Maastricht

Winery Description

Location and History

The estate is situated in the Durbanville wine valley, just outside Cape Town, South Africa. This region is characterised by its rolling hills and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, which is just 10 kilometers away. The ocean breeze plays a crucial role in moderating temperatures, contributing to the ideal conditions for grape growing. The farm’s heritage dates back to 1702, when it was granted to Hendrick Seeger, a Dutch settler that arrived in South Africa with the Dutch East India Shipping company. Looking at the clay-rich soils, the farm was so named as it reminded these first settlers of the land of their hometown: Maastricht.

The farm had many different owners and uses over the years, however 19th Century documents show that Maastricht was one of the first nine farms in the Cape to be registered as a wine producer. The Louw family bought the farm in 1982 and have been cultivating vineyards ever since. Acknowledged as one of the top grape growers in the Cape Winelands, today Maastricht has about 100 hectares of vineyards with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon plantings as well as a small block of Pinot Noir.

The Louw family, over their 35 years in the industry, has cultivated a reputation as one of the top grape growers in the Cape Winelands. The vineyards are managed with care, showcasing the distinct characteristics of the Durbanville terroir. Their philosophy emphasises the importance of small, handcrafted vineyard parcels, ensuring each wine brings out the unique traits of the locale, from fruit-driven whites to well-balanced reds.
