Mont Rochelle

Winery Description

Location and History

Nestled in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley, Mont Rochelle benefits from a Mediterranean climate characterized by dry summers and 1000mm of winter rainfall. The vineyards thrive in varied microclimates, thanks to the local topography and the influence of south-easterly winds, which extend the ripening period of the grapes. Mont Rochelle was originally established in the 1850s as a fruit packing shed, later transformed into a winery known for its National Heritage status. This historical significance requires unique architectural features, such as horizontal white wine tanks that accommodate the building constraints. The lush landscapes surrounding the farm, combined with the region’s rich history, provide a stunning backdrop for wine production and tasting, reflecting the deeply rooted winemaking traditions of the area.

Wine Tasting

The wine tasting experience at Mont Rochelle is enhanced by the expertise of winemaker Michael Langenhoven, who has honed his skills at various prestigious wineries around the globe. He is known for crafting exceptional wines from diverse grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine reflects the influence of the unique terroir of the Franschhoek Valley. Guests can explore the traditional wine cellar, which processes nearly 150 tons of grapes each season. The tasting room offers an inviting atmosphere where visitors can sample Mont Rochelle's award-winning wines, including notable achievements such as double gold at the VERITAS Wine Awards. The winery also provides options for purchasing wines directly, with convenient home delivery services available.
