Winery Description

Location and History

Montagu Co-operative Wine Cellar Limited is located at the entrance to the Little Karoo, approximately 200km from Cape Town on Route 62. Originally named Montagu Muskadelboere Koöperasie, the cellar was established on 17 March 1941 by 15 founding members under the leadership of Mr. DJ Burger Snr as chairman. They acquired Mr. PJ Joubert’s premises on Bath Street and commenced production in 1942 with the assistance of Mr. Joubert’s staff. Rapid growth followed, and under the chairmanship of Mr. KW Carl du Toit, the decision was made in 1948 to purchase the current premises.

The cellar was constructed and wine production began under the guidance of wine pioneers Dr. Costa and Mr. Moni. The Monis Marsala and Moscato were first produced in this cellar, a tradition that continues today. From an initial 800 tons of grapes and 15 members in 1942, the cellar expanded to handle 16,000 tons of grapes and 41 members by 2017. Currently, muscadel production accounts for only 400 tons of the total, with a limited amount produced using traditional methods for exclusive public offerings. Around fourteen million litre of wine goes through Montagu Wine Cellar every year.

Wine Tasting

The cellar produces both white and red muscadel, and it proudly boasts numerous trophies for its award-winning wines. The cellar has also been recognised multiple times as the “Champion Wine Cellar of the Region.” Its red muscadel has been selected for the prestigious Nederburg Wine Auction four times, where it was praised as “the best wine for the price anywhere in the world.” The cellar offers a variety of red and white wines, including its famous muscadel, with a bottle range that includes two white wines, three red wines, three sweet wines, and both white and red sparkling grape juices.

Wine tasting generally include Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Merlot Ruby Cabernet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadel and the Lady Mary Montagu Perlé Pink Moscato.
