Overgaauw

Winery Description

Location and History

Overgaauw Wine Estate sits on Stellenboschkloof Road in Vlottenburg, bordered by the magnificent Stellenbosch mountains. The estate was founded in 1905 by Abraham Van Velden, who initiated the family's winemaking legacy. Over the decades, the Van Velden family made significant contributions to the South African wine industry, including being pioneers in the use of small, new French oak barrels and crafting the country's first Bordeaux blend in 1979. The estate's vineyards cover 20 hectares, benefiting from various soil types including Hutton, Clovelly, and gravel soils. The unique terroir conveys the distinctive characteristics that define Overgaauw's wines. Situated close to the Atlantic Ocean, the cool breezes from the ocean help to moderate summer temperatures and enhance the natural acidity of the grapes. Overgaauw's philosophy combines innovation and tradition, ensuring that each bottle honors their rich heritage while reflecting the land's essence.
