Spookfontein Wines

Winery Description

Location and History

Spookfontein is a 313-hectare estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, the Kleinrivier and Babilonstoring Mountains.  The name ‘Spook’ (Dutch for ‘ghost’) comes from the legend that one can see a “spirit” in the patterns of the flowing farm spring. Originally established as a farm in 1847, the estate is a Fynbos haven, with 14 hectares under vine and olive trees. The venue offers breathtaking views of the valley, the vineyards and the mountains.

Thanks to the efforts of the Davis family and their many skilled collaborators, Spookfontein has become a prestigious boutique wine farm featuring a renowned restaurant and accommodation inspired by tradition, perfect for authentic Hemel-en-Aarde retreats.

Wine Tasting

Driven by a deep interest in the science and art of winemaking, Dewald Grobler dedicates himself to bringing out the best in each grape. Creating a diverse range of wines is a significant challenge; it requires someone with passion to cultivate the grapes. This is where the harvesting team steps in—a dedicated group who care for the vineyard blocks with pride and determination, skillfully managing the unique terroir to produce world-class vines and grapes.

With its curved organic design, the cellar and the tasting room were constructed extensively from natural materials. Architect DJ Carr ensured the cellar would not intrude on nature but embrace it.

Wines available to taste include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir, as well as three blends.

Restaurant

Spookfontein Restaurant is a culinary haven for both food and wine enthusiasts. Head Chef Charl and owners Vaughan and Francois strive to achieve the perfect balance between contemporary cuisine and timeless sophistication. With a focus on authenticity, creativity, and precision, locally sourced ingredients are transformed into mouth-watering dishes that ensure guests return time and again.

Accommodation

Spookfontein offers two spacious self-catering two-bedroom cottages; Blue Crane Cottage is a real charmer with its high reed ceilings, large stone fireplace, and magnificent views. Set between vineyards and mountains, visitors can relax with simple country décor, a well-stocked practical kitchen, and two bathrooms. All rooms open onto the patio via French doors, allowing a soft sea breeze and vistas from every corner. The water comes from a natural spring on the farm, with its colour varying from season to season due to the natural minerals.

Sunbird Cottage offers visitors a spacious covered patio, providing front-row seats to the majestic Hemel-en-Aarde Valley views. In true country fashion, visitors can enjoy a built-in braai around the back or entertain and unwind on the front patio, which leads to the living areas and bedrooms. Restrained décor and fuss-free furniture make this cottage family-friendly, with a wood fireplace to cosy up during cooler months and a large fridge for comfortable stocking up. The water comes from a natural spring on the farm, with its colour varying from season to season due to the natural minerals.
