Vondeling at Vrymansfontein

Winery Description

Location and History

Vondeling Wines is nestled in the Voor-Paardeberg region, about 45 minutes from Cape Town. This Western Cape area, with its rural charm, sits at the base of the Paardeberg Mountain. The region's decomposed granite soils and cooling afternoon winds contribute to the vibrancy of its wines.

The estate includes a historic Cape Dutch homestead and St Clement’s Chapel, surrounded by stunning views of the surrounding mountains and vineyards. From the mountain's peak, one can spot an original Signal Cannon, historically used to alert farmers of ships arriving in Cape Town.

Wine Tasting

Vondeling’s wine journey began in 2005, with 100 hectares of vineyards, focusing on Mediterranean varietals. Older vines, such as Sauvignon Blanc (planted in 1983) and Chenin Blanc (1986), now provide some of the best fruit. Winemaking practices here emphasise minimal intervention, allowing the grapes’ natural characteristics to shine. Harvested in the cool mornings, the grapes undergo hand-sorting and are processed with care in a converted milking shed. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, showcasing the unique terroir of the estate.

Restaurant

Vrymansfontein’s dining scene centres on Scape restaurant, where simplicity and shared plates highlight fresh, seasonal ingredients inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. Chef Kevin Grobler, with experience at Michelin-starred restaurants, leads the kitchen. The menu offers a variety of seafood, meats, and daily specials, accompanied by wine pairings from Vondeling and other local producers.

For a more casual setting, the Tree Bar, under the oak trees, provides a relaxed atmosphere with mezze, finger foods, and salads, perfect for families and groups. The Vondeling Tasting Bar offers guests the opportunity to explore the wines before purchasing, with expert guidance and cellar door pricing.
