Wellington Wines

Winery Description

Location and History

Wellington Wines traces its origins to the early 20th century when three distinguished wineries laid the foundation for what would eventually become a renowned wine producer. In 1906, the Wellington Co-operative Winery Ltd. was established, followed by Bovlei Co-operative Ltd. in 1907 and Wamakersvallei Winery in 1941. These three pioneers, driven by a passion for wine and a commitment to elevating the Wellington wine industry, united in recent years to form Wellington Wines.

Today, Wellington Wines continues its founders' legacy by crafting exceptional quality wines. The years of combined history and expertise are reflected in each bottle, honouring past traditions while embracing modern trends. Certified by the South African Wine Industry Information & Systems (SAWIS), Wellington Wines proudly carries the Wine of Origin Wellington or Wine of Origin Coastal Region designation.

Located in the Wellington District, along the inland border of the Coastal Region, Wellington Wines benefits from a unique terroir. The district is nestled between the Paarl District to the southwest and the Swartland District to the northwest, within the broader Western Cape geographical unit. The surrounding Groenberg, Hawekwa, and Limietberg mountain ranges create a landscape of varied slopes and valleys, each with distinct microclimates. Vineyards thrive on the foothills, particularly along the banks of the Kromme River, where they enjoy Mediterranean weather patterns with cold, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The diverse soil types, primarily weathered granite, alluvial, and shale, offer excellent water and nutrient retention, ideal for producing high-quality grapes.
